Before You Were This: Healing the Person You Were First is the opening book of The Repair Series by Karmin Fouché. It is available now in Kindle, paperback and hardcover.
A quiet return to the self that existed before the roles arrived. Written for anyone who suspects the shape they have taken is not quite the shape they are.
- Goodreads
“A thoughtful and deeply relatable read… Practical, heartfelt, and beautifully written.”
Read the opening
For the child who adapted, and the adult who came back for them.
There’s a version of you that existed before all of this. Before the job title. Before the coping mechanisms. Before you learned which parts of yourself were welcome in a room and which parts needed to wait in the car.
That version of you didn’t disappear. She’s still in there. He’s still in there. Making decisions you think you’re making alone.
In Why We Do That, I wrote about the patterns. Why we people-please. Why we chase perfection like it owes us money. Why we burn out and call it ambition. That book was about noticing. This one is about tracing those patterns back to where they started, because every pattern has a birthplace, and for most of us the birthplace is childhood.
I want to be upfront about what this book is and what it isn’t.
It isn’t therapy. I have a psychology background, and one of the first things you learn in that field is the difference between understanding something and treating it. This book will help you understand. For some of you, understanding will be enough to shift things. For others, it will be the map that gets you to a professional who can walk the harder terrain with you. Both outcomes are wins. I’ll tell you clearly, later in this book, when I think the work needs more than a book.
It also isn’t a blame exercise. We’re going back to your childhood, and some of what we find there will implicate people you love. Parents who did their best with what they had. Parents who didn’t. Teachers, siblings, circumstances nobody chose. The goal is never to build a case against anyone. The goal is to understand what happened to you, because what happened to you became how you operate, and how you operate is the thing you keep bumping into at thirty-four when your partner asks a normal question and something in your chest slams shut.
One idea sits under all twelve chapters. The child you were is still running parts of your life. Psychologists have called this the inner child for decades, and the term has been so overused by the wellness industry that it’s easy to dismiss. Don’t. Underneath the Instagram version sits some of the most solid thinking in psychology. John Bowlby showed us that the bonds we form in our first years become the template for every bond after. Alice Miller showed us how children abandon their real selves to keep their parents’ love, and how that abandonment follows them into adulthood. Carl Jung wrote about the child archetype long before anyone put it on a mug.
The wound is real. So is the repair.
This book moves in four parts. First, we meet the child you were: what the inner child actually is once you strip the fluff away, how childhood wires us, and where it hurt. Second, we look at the adult you became: the symptoms nobody connects, the relationship patterns, the faces the wounded child wears. Third, we go back: a five-movement healing process, the tools that work, and the deepest chapter in this book, which is learning to re-parent yourself. Fourth, we look forward: how to live with a healed child inside you, how to break the cycle, and how to stay whole when life tests the repair.
You’ll find reflection prompts throughout. Do them or don’t. I mean that. Some people heal by writing. Some heal by reading a sentence at a red light and sitting with it for a week. There’s no compliance requirement here.
One more thing before we start. If you read Why We Do That, you know I believe the smallest behaviours tell the biggest truths. The way someone goes quiet when plans change. The way an adult apologises for crying. The way you might be reading this introduction and already deciding it applies to everyone you know except you.
That last one? That’s the child. Protecting you from a book.
Let’s go meet them.
