Read the opening

For the two people in every repair: the one who returns, and the one who lets them.

I’ve spent more than a decade writing books that carry other people’s names. Thirty-three of them, at last count. It’s honest work and I love it, and it trains one skill above all others, which is hearing the difference between a sentence that’s true and a sentence that’s performing. After enough years, the hearing doesn’t switch off. So the deal for the pages ahead is the one I’d hold any client to. Nothing decorative. Nothing performed. This book carries my own name because it’s made of my own material, and if a sentence is in here, I mean it.

I wrote it for a particular woman, and there’s a fair chance she’s you. It’s around eleven at night. The house or the flat has finally gone quiet, everyone who needed something from you today has been given it, and you’re doing the thing you do, working on yourself in the margins of a life that doesn’t leave margins. You’re capable. Everyone says so, it’s practically your address. And somewhere underneath the competence sits a set of questions about love, why you choose who you choose, why the same fight keeps arriving in new clothes, why kindness sometimes makes you flinch, that no achievement has ever answered. This book was written for that hour.

Book One ended with you. This one begins the moment someone else walks into the room.

Before You Were This was about the person you were first, and the repair you owed her. If you read it, you’ll recognise the ground rule, because it travels with the series and it matters even more here. Understanding is not blame. We look at where love was learnt so we can love better, and for no other reason. Your parents appear in these pages as people who were once children themselves. Your partner appears as someone running old protection, same as you. Nobody here is on trial.

If you’re arriving fresh, you’re welcome too. Everything you need is inside this book.

One warning, kindly meant. Somewhere around chapter four you’ll feel the urge to read a paragraph out loud at someone you love, in a tone. Notice the urge. It’s the oldest trick self-awareness plays, turning outward the second it gets uncomfortable. This book works best pointed at yourself first. There’ll be time for reading together later, and chapter six will show you how to do that without anyone needing a lawyer.

Go slowly. Love is where the healing gets practised, and practice is allowed to be imperfect.

A map, briefly. Part One is about the love you learned, the house that taught it, the role it handed you, and the partners your pattern chooses. Part Two is the love you practise, the fighting and the mending, and then the harder curriculum, trust after promises, boundaries that don’t abandon anyone, distance, and the practical life two people actually run, the money, the labour, the logistics. Part Three is the people around the love, friends, family, the body that has to trust all of it, and the art of being loved well. Part Four is the love you’re building on purpose, including the chapter I most hope you never need, on when repair is not the work, and what endings ask of us. Every chapter closes with a section for reading together, a handful of questions for your own noticing, and one small repair, a single practice, never homework, always optional. Some chapters will read like a mirror. Some will read like a window into someone you love. Both are the book working.

And if you’re the kind of reader who underlines, let me put the sentence where you can’t miss it. You’re going to be fine. In fact, you’re going to be golden. Nothing in these pages, no pattern, no history, no house, has ever been a life sentence, and a woman who works on herself the way you already do owns every tool this work needs. My whole job is to hand you the map and stay out of your way.
